Lady Gaga – Marry The Night

Posted in Lady Ga Ga on January 17th, 2012 by H Bradley

“Marry the Night” is a song by American recording artist Lady Gaga. It was released as the fifth single from her second studio album, Born This Way (2011). The song was written and produced by Lady Gaga and Fernando Garibay, and was recorded on the tour bus during The Monster Ball Tour with Garibay. Revealed in February 2011, the song was inspired by the energy of Gaga’s previous song “Dance in the Dark” and the love for her hometown, New York City. The song was released for promotion on Farmville, six days before the release of Born This Way.
“Marry the Night” is a dance-pop song influenced by house and electropop. The song features electronic church bells, a driving electro organ sound, techno beats and a funk-rock influenced breakdown. The lyrics are about Gaga’s love of the night and partying, while serving as a homage to her hometown. The song received mostly positive reviews from critics. Reviewers also found influences of Italian disco music producer Giorgio Moroder and American rock musician Bruce Springsteen in the song. After the release of Born This Way, “Marry the Night” charted in some nations due to digital sales from the parent album. The song debuted at 79 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and entered the Canadian Hot 100 at 91. It also charted in the Walloon region of Belgium, South Korea and the United Kingdom.
Gaga directed the songs’s accompanying music video, which was filmed in New York City. It tells the story of when she was signed by her label Interscope Records after being rejected by her first label, with scenes in a clinic, a dance studio, her own New York apartment and a rooftop car parking lot. She sports outfits by Calvin Klein Collection, Yves Saint Laurent and Stéphane Rolland. Prior to its release, the music video was teased with video stills and previews. Journalists wrote positive reviews for the video and appreciated its narrative theme. Gaga has performed the song in India’s Formula One, the MTV Europe Music Awards, UK’s The X Factor and others. She also recorded an acoustic version for her Thanksgiving Day special, A Very Gaga Thanksgiving.

Hung Up

“Hung Up” prominently features a sample of the pop group ABBA’s hit single “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight),” for which Madonna personally sought permission from ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Musically the song is influenced by 1980s pop, with a chugging groove and chorus and a background element of a ticking clock that suggests the fear of wasting time. Lyrically the song is written as a traditional dance number about a strong, independent woman who has relationship troubles.
“Hung Up” received critical praise from reviewers, who suggested that the track should restore the singer’s popularity, which had diminished following the release of her 2003 album American Life. Critics suggested it was her best dance track to date and have compared it favorably to other Madonna tracks in the same genre. They also complimented the effective synchronization of the ABBA sample with the actual song. “Hung Up” became a worldwide commercial success, peaking atop the charts of 41 countries and earning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. It was Madonna’s 36th top 10 single on the Billboard Hot 100, tying her with Elvis Presley as the artist with most top ten hits. It also became the most successful dance song of the decade in the United States. “Hung Up” remains one of the best-selling singles of all time, with sales of over nine million copies worldwide.
Madonna has performed the song in a number of live appearances, including as the finale number in 2006′s Confessions Tour and a heavy metal-inspired arrangement in the 2008 Sticky & Sweet Tour. The corresponding music video is a tribute to John Travolta, his movies and to dancing in general. Directed by Johan Renck, the clip starts with Madonna clad in a pink leotard dancing alone in a ballet studio and concludes at a gaming parlor where she dances with her backup troupe. Interspersed are scenes of people displaying their dancing skills in a variety of settings, including a Los Angeles residential neighbourhood, a small restaurant and the London Underground.

Give It 2 Me

“Give It 2 Me” is a song by American singer-songwriter Madonna, featured on her eleventh studio album Hard Candy. It was released on June 4, 2008 by Warner Bros. Records as the second single from the album. The song was written by Madonna as an anthemic, self-manifesto song which, although it appears to be about dance and sex, is a reference to Madonna’s career spanning three decades in the music industry. Musically, “Give It 2 Me” is an upbeat dance song, featuring instrumentation from West African percussion and cowbells. Backing vocals are provided by Pharrell Williams.
“Give It 2 Me” received positive reviews from contemporary critics. The song became Madonna’s thirty-ninth number-one single on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. It charted on the Billboard Hot 100 for one week, and reached a peak of fifty-seven only, due to limited radio play. The song topped the music charts in Hungary, the Netherlands and Spain, while it attained top-ten positions on the charts of many other nations.
The music video featured Madonna recreating her look from the Elle magazine May covergirl photo shoot, and was directed by photographer Tom Munro. Williams had a guest appearance in the video. It received positive response for her retro-inspired look. Madonna performed “Give It 2 Me” on both the promotional tour for Hard Candy, and the 2008–09 Sticky & Sweet Tour, where she performed it as the final song of the concert. “Give It 2 Me” received a Grammy nomination in 2009 in the Best Dance Recording category.

Express Yourself

“Express Yourself” is a song by American singer-songwriter Madonna from her fourth studio album Like a Prayer. It was released as the second single from the album on May 9, 1989, by Sire Records. The song was included on the greatest hits compilation albums The Immaculate Collection (1990), and Celebration (2009). “Express Yourself” was the first song that Madonna and producer Stephen Bray collaborated for Like a Prayer. Written and produced by them, the song was a tribute to American funk and soul band Sly and the Family Stone. The main inspiration behind the song is female empowerment, urging women never to go for second-best and to always express their inner feelings.
“Express Yourself” is an upbeat dance-pop song that takes its main theme from the 1965 song “Respect” by Otis Redding. It features instrumentation from brass, hand claps and drum beats, while the chorus is backed by the sound of saxophone and percussion. The lyrics talk about rejecting material pleasures and only accepting the best for oneself; subtexts are employed throughout the song. “Express Yourself” received positive reviews from critics, who applauded the gender equality message of the song and complimented the song for being a hymn to freedom and encouragement to women and all oppressed minorities. The song was also a commercial success, reaching the top of the charts in Canada, Europe, Italy and Switzerland and top-five in other nations, except France, where the song was not released.
