Vogue

“Vogue” is an upbeat dance-pop song which contains a house beat and groove. Noted to contain influences of deep house, it is a contemporary track which followed the trends of dance music in the 1990s; nevertheless, it has strong influences of 70s disco within its composition. The song also contains a spoken section, in which the singer namechecks various golden era Hollywood celebrities. Lyrically, the song is about enjoying oneself on the dance floor no matter who one is, and it contains a theme of escapism. Critically, “Vogue” has been met with appreciation ever since its release; reviewers have praised its anthemic nature, calling it a funky and catchy song, as well as one of the singer’s musical highlights. Critics also noticed that the song, which bears strong resemblances to classic disco music, was still successful despite the genre’s commercial death several years before. The song also won several music awards. Commercially, the song has become Madonna’s biggest international hits, topping the charts in over 30 countries, becoming her first multi-platinum single in the United States and selling over six million copies globally, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time.
The music video for “Vogue”, directed by David Fincher, showed Madonna paying homage to numerous golden era Hollywood actresses. Shot in black-and-white, the video takes stylistic inspiration from the 1920s and 30s; in it, Madonna and her dancers can be seen voguing different choreographed scenes. Critics noted the way in which Madonna used her postmodern influence to expose an underground subcultural movement to the masses. The video has been ranked as one of the greatest of all times in different critic lists and polls, and won three awards at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards out of a total of nine nominations.

Five singles were released from the album, with “Like a Virgin”, “Material Girl” and “Into the Groove” becoming worldwide hits. To promote the album, Madonna embarked on The Virgin Tour, which had shows in cities of North America only. Like a Virgin has attained significance as a cultural artifact of the 80s. Madonna proved that she was not a one-hit wonder and was able to provide herself with a permanent footing in the music world.

Glee Cast – Teenage Dream

Posted in Glee on March 8th, 2011 by H Bradley

Teenage Dream is a song that was featured in the episode, “Never Been Kissed.” It was originally performed by Katy Perry, from her second mainstream album of the same name. The song is performed by the Dalton Academy Warblers, with Blaine (Darren Criss) performing lead vocals. It is implied that he is singing the song to Kurt after befriending him. It is also impiled that Kurt began having a crush on Blaine after hearing this song.
The background vocals were arranged and performed by the Beelzebubs, an all-male a cappella group from Tufts University.
“Teenage Dream” became Glee’s second #1 single on the Billboard Digital Songs Chart, following “Don’t Stop Believing” a year before, and followed a week later by “Forget You.” It’s the most second succesful song of Glee Cast. Darren Criss performed this, with the warblers and Katy Perry at a Trevor Project event.

Glee – Don’t Stop Believing Remixes

Posted in Glee on February 6th, 2010 by H Bradley

“Don’t Stop Believin’” is a popular song by the American rock band Journey, originally released as a single from their 1981 album Escape. Often considered the band’s signature song, the power ballad became a top ten hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, the UK Singles Chart and the Australian Singles Chart. As digital downloads became prominent in the late 2000s it enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, partly due to being featured on several television shows. Allmusic has described the song as “an anthem for the young who wanted to feel free and unrestricted”, featuring “one of the best opening keyboard riffs in rock.”
