Dolly Parton – Jolene

Posted in Dolly Parton on January 18th, 2010 by hbradley

“Jolene” tells the tale of a housewife confronting a beautiful seductress who she believes is trying to steal away her husband and begging her “please don’t take my man”. The song became Parton’s second solo number-one single on the country charts after being released as a single in late 1973 (prior to the album’s release). It reached the top position in February 1974; it also was a moderate pop hit for her and a minor adult contemporary chart entry, and was released as a single in the UK the following year, where it reached number seven in the UK singles chart.
Parton has said that the inspiration for the “Jolene” character was a tall, red-headed bank teller who Parton believed was flirting with her husband, and her husband’s apparent vulnerability to the teller’s charm as indicated by his sudden interest in making frequent trips to the bank. In her live performances of the song, Dolly often states she fought this woman tooth and nail for her husband. However, Parton has also stated that the name “Jolene” was taken from the name of a little red-headed girl with green eyes seeking an autograph after a concert.

Steps was a British pop group that achieved a series of charted singles between 1997 and 2001. Their name was based around a simple marketing gimmick: each of their music videos were choreographed, and the dance steps were included with most of their single releases. Steps formed on 7 May 1997 and disbanded on 26 December 2001. In total Steps have sold more than 15 million records, and achieved 14 consecutive Top 5 singles – a feat only surpassed by Oasis (with 18) and The Beatles and Westlife (who both had 20).

Posted in Almighty, S Club 7 on January 5th, 2010 by hbradley

As well as the popularity of their television series, S Club 7 won two BRIT Awards—in 2000 for British breakthrough act and in 2002, for best British single. In 2001, the group earned the Record of the Year award. Group member Paul Cattermole departed the group in 2002, and the group changed its name from S Club 7 to simply S Club. Their penultimate single reached number-five in the UK charts, and their final studio album failed to make the top ten.
After Cattermole left the group, S Club 7 fought many rumours presuming that they were about to split. However, on April 21, 2003, during a live onstage performance, S Club announced that they were to disband. After a five year split, it was announced in October 2008 that O’Meara, Cattermole and McIntosh are to perform a mini-reunion tour. The tour currently consists of a series of university and nightclub gigs, where they perform a setlist consisting of a selection of songs from their Greatest Hits album.
