Michael Jackson R.I.P

Posted in Michael Jackson on June 26th, 2009 by hbradley

Well I wanted to say some words for Michael Jackson, dead today at 50 from a heart attack..but I’m actually speechless. I grew up listening to Michael. My first single I bought was ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ and have bought every album and single he has released since right up to his Thriller relaunch. Despite some questionable behaviour on his part, in his time, he was a visionary. I can rememeber the chills I had down my spine when he first did his moonwalk and how in the Thriller/Dangerous days how each video was a event.
I have never seen Michael Jackson live and was looking forward to see him in London.
So….goodbye to MJ…thank you for you musical journey. RIP

Originally a low-budget film by a new studio and with no major stars, Dirty Dancing became a massive box office hit. As of 2007, it has earned $300 million worldwide. It was the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video, and the Dirty Dancing soundtrack generated two multi-platinum albums and multiple singles, including “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life”, which won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song, and a Grammy Award for best duet.

Katrina And The Waves – Walking On Sunshine

Posted in Katrina And The Waves, Sleazesisters on June 24th, 2009 by hbradley

The Katrina and the Waves album was a substantial critical and commercial success, and the group had a worldwide hit with the song “Walking on Sunshine,” (#9 US, #8 UK) (a completely re-recorded, and substantially rearranged version of the song when compared to its initial 1983 Canada-only release). A Grammy award nominee for “Best New Artist” followed, as did constant touring, both of which helped to spur moderate sales of new releases.
“Love Shine a Light” became Katrina and the Waves’ biggest-ever UK hit, peaking at #3 in the UK Singles Chart.

Diana Ross – Almighty Mixes

In early December 2008, Motown announced the result of an international poll of the greatest Motown tracks. The winner, worldwide, was Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” while Ross’ version of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” was No. 2. This track was the top choice by British voters. The poll determined the track listing for a Motown fiftieth anniversary album to be released in December. A significant number of Supremes and Diana Ross songs finished in the top 50 of the poll, requiring the elimination of some of these songs from the final tracklisting to prevent an unbalanced track selection.
On October 16-17, 2009, Diana Ross is scheduled to headline the annual Dutch concert event, “Symphonica in Rosso”, in the 29,000-seat Gelredome Stadium, in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Ross will be accompanied by a 40-piece orchestra.

The Preacher’s Wife: Original Soundtrack Album. included six gospel songs with Georgia Mass Choir that were recorded at the Great Star Rising Baptist Church in Atlanta. Houston also duetted with gospel legend Shirley Caesar. The album sold six million copies worldwide and scored hit singles with “I Believe in You and Me” and “Step by Step”, becoming the largest selling gospel album of all time. Some critics, like USA Today, noted the presence of her emotional depth, while The UK Times said “To hear Houston going at full throttle with the 35 piece Georgia Mass Choir struggling to keep up is to realise what her phenomenal voice was made for.”

She has won four Grammy Awards including the 1973 Best New Artist and the prestigious Record of the Year in 1989 for the # 1 hit “Wind Beneath My Wings”, the theme from Beaches. Her rendition of the 1990 “From a Distance” also earned her a Grammy and is another of her most popular songs. When the American Film Institute announced “The 100 Years of the Greatest Songs” on June 22, 2004, two of hers were selected by the board: “Wind Beneath My Wings” (#44) and “The Rose” (#83). Madonna – Vogue Remixes

Posted in Madonna on June 22nd, 2009 by hbradley

“Vogue” is a House Classic and was released on March 20, 1990 by Sire Records. It later appeared in a slightly remixed and extended form on the 1990 greatest hits compilation The Immaculate Collection.

In late-1989, after the album Like a Prayer had spawned three U.S. hits – the title track, “Express Yourself” and “Cherish” – and a top-five European single in “Dear Jessie” – its fourth US single, “Oh Father”, stalled at number twenty in the charts. Perhaps to ensure that the last single release of “Keep It Together” would fare better on the charts, Madonna and producer Shep Pettibone decided to compose a new song to be placed on the flipside of “Keep It Together” and quickly produced “Vogue”. The song was partly inspired by a dance performed in New York clubs, on the underground gay scene of the same name in which dancers used a series of complex hand gestures and body poses and movements to imitate their favourite Hollywood stars (see the list of the names of the Hollywood stars below), as well as the cover models on the magazine Vogue.
Madonna brought the hitherto underground “vogueing” culture into the mainstream with the release of her song. After presenting the song to Warner Bros. executives, all parties involved decided that the song was too good to be wasted on a B-side and that it should be released as a single. Although the song itself had nothing to do with Madonna’s then-upcoming movie Dick Tracy, it was included on the album I’m Breathless, which contained songs from and inspired by the film.
In 2003, Madonna fans were asked to vote for their Top 20 Madonna singles of all-time by Q-Magazine. “Vogue” was allocated the #14 spot. The song is featured in The Devil Wears Prada during a scene with Anne Hathaway.

Featured as the theme to the romantic comedy film Mannequin, it hit #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 on April 4, 1987 and reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart for four weeks the following month and became the UK’s 2nd biggest selling single of 1987. At the time, it made Grace Slick the oldest female artist to have a number one single in the United States, though the record was later broken by Cher’s “Believe” in 1999. The song also received an Oscar nomination for “Best Original Song” at the 60th Academy Awards. It was released on the album No Protection in 1987.

    Village People – Y.M.C.A. Remixes

Posted in The Village People on June 22nd, 2009 by hbradley

Village People are a concept disco group formed in the late 1970s. The group is well known for their on-stage costumes as for their catchy tunes and suggestive lyrics. Original members were: police officer (Victor Willis), American Indian chief (Felipe Rose), cowboy (Randy Jones), construction worker (David Hodo), biker (Glenn Hughes) and Military man (Alex Briley). For the release of “In the Navy”, both Willis and Briley appeared as an admiral and a sailor, respectively. Originally created to target disco’s primarily gay fan base by featuring stereotypical gay fantasy personas, the band’s popularity quickly brought them into mainstream.

Village People scored a number of disco and dance hits, including their trademark “Macho Man”, “Go West”, the classic club medley of “San Francisco (You’ve Got Me) / In Hollywood (Everybody is a Star)”, “In the Navy”, “Can’t Stop the Music”, and their biggest hit, “Y.M.C.A.”.

Village People have sold 85 million albums and singles. In September, 2008 the group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
